Torrevieja - "Salt-white and sun-tanned"

Discover Torrevieja – the “Salt-white and sun-tanned”, one of the most attractive tourist places in Alicante and Valencia. They said that the use of salt in the lagoon of La Mata started from the Romans, back in the 1st century BC, although there is no written record until the 13th century.

Nowadays, in our time, the Torrevieja Natural Park salt flats are the most extensive salt flats in Europe. 600.000 tons of salt compressed in 3.700 hectares is one of the most important in Europe. (Imagine 2,187 football pitches together)

Continuing briefly with the history of the salt mines of Torrevieja and La Mata, we can say that they formed part of the Crown’s immanent royalty, finally being ceded in 1321 by the Infante Don Sancho, son of King Alfonso XI to the Council of Orihuela for their exploitation.

In 1488, the city of Orihuela ceded the Salinas de La Mata to the Catholic Monarchs, who were looking for resources for the conquest of Granada. And it was in 1766 when the State administration began to take over the exploitation of the salt mines of Torrevieja and La Mata for the production of salt.

From 1869, the system of exploitation by lease was introduced with contractual modalities that have varied and been transferred to the present day.
